Executive Governor of Jigawa State
Umar Namadi (born 7 April 1963) is a Nigerian accountant and politician who has served as Governor of Jigawa State since 29 May 2023. He was born in Kafin Hausa in present-day Jigawa State and studied accounting at Bayero University Kano, where he later obtained an MBA. He qualified as a chartered accountant in 1993 and became a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in 2010.
Before entering government, Namadi practised as an accountant in Kano and worked in the corporate sector, including as the pioneer head of management accounts at the Dangote Group. He was elected deputy governor of Jigawa State on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket in 2019, serving alongside Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar until 2023.
Namadi won the March 2023 governorship election as the APC candidate and was sworn in on 29 May 2023 with Aminu Usman as his deputy. His administration has organised its programme around a 12-point 'Greater Jigawa' agenda covering agriculture, education, health, infrastructure, industrialisation, human capital, technology, social protection, security and economic diversification.
In 2025 his government unveiled five-year development plans (2025-2030) for the state's 27 local government areas, aligned with the state's 12-point agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals. Ahead of the 2027 elections, Aminu Usman was again named as his running mate.
Umar Namadi is a chartered accountant who founded the Kano-based accounting firm Namadi, Umar & Co. He served as the pioneer head of the Management Accounts Department of the Dangote Group, and was a member of professional bodies including the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria and the Chartered Institute of Taxation. He served on Jigawa State committees on contract verification and staff audit before entering elective politics, and was deputy governor of Jigawa State from May 2019 to May 2023 under Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.
