Executive Governor of Kaduna State
Uba Sani (born 31 December 1970) is a Nigerian engineer and politician who has served as Governor of Kaduna State since 29 May 2023. Before becoming governor he represented the Kaduna Central senatorial district in the 9th National Assembly from 2019 to 2023.
Sani trained as a mechanical engineer at Kaduna Polytechnic and later obtained a postgraduate diploma in business administration from the University of Abuja and an MSc in finance from the University of Calabar. He worked in public affairs and advisory roles at federal and state level from 1999, including in the administrations of President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Nasir El-Rufai. In 2018 he founded the Uba Sani Foundation, which supports health, education and livelihood programmes.
As the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Sani narrowly won the March 2023 governorship election with 730,002 votes against 719,196 for Isa Ashiru of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was sworn in on 29 May 2023 with Hadiza Sabuwa Balarabe, who had been deputy governor since 2019, continuing as his deputy.
His administration's programme, the 'SUSTAIN' agenda, prioritises security, infrastructure (with a stated emphasis on rural roads), institutional reform, trade and investment, human capital and citizen engagement. His 2025 budget was titled 'Sustaining Rural Transformation and Inclusive Development'. For the 2027 election cycle, Balarabe has indicated she will not continue as running mate.
Uba Sani, a mechanical engineer by training, entered politics after the return to civilian rule in 1999 and served as Special Adviser on Public Affairs to President Olusegun Obasanjo. He later held advisory roles in the Federal Capital Territory Administration under minister Nasir El-Rufai and in the Kaduna State Ministry of Housing and Works. After an unsuccessful bid for the PDP Kaduna Central senatorial ticket in 2011, he served from 2015 as Special Adviser on Political and Intergovernmental Affairs to Governor El-Rufai, and was elected Senator for Kaduna Central on the APC platform in 2019, serving until 2023.
