He was born in Birnin Kebbi and studied at the Polytechnic in Birnin Kebbi and at Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, where he obtained an MBA; he also holds a doctorate in education.
Idris rose through the teachers' union, chairing the Kebbi State branches of the NUT and the NLC before serving as national treasurer and, from 2018, national president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and deputy president of the Nigeria Labour Congress.
He won the APC governorship primary in May 2022 and was declared winner of the 2023 Kebbi State governorship election by INEC on 17 April 2023, following a supplementary poll. He was sworn in on 29 May 2023 with Abubakar Umar Argungu (Umar Abubakar Tafida) as deputy governor.
His administration has emphasised free education and scholarships, teacher recruitment and welfare, and road infrastructure in Birnin Kebbi and across the state's three senatorial zones. In August 2026 the APC named former finance commissioner Ibrahim Muhammad-Augie as his running mate for the 2027 election in place of the incumbent deputy, citing litigation surrounding the 2023 election.
Nasir Idris is a teacher and labour leader. He served as chairman of the Kebbi State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) and of the Nigeria Labour Congress in Kebbi, and as national treasurer of the NUT. In 2018 he was elected national president of the Nigeria Union of Teachers and became deputy president of the Nigeria Labour Congress. In May 2022 he won the APC governorship primary in Kebbi State.
