Biography

Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri (born 27 October 1967) is a Nigerian politician who has served as Governor of Adamawa State since 29 May 2019. Born in Gulak, Madagali Local Government Area, he attended schools in Gulak and Michika and studied History at the University of Maiduguri.

A former Speaker of the Adamawa State House of Assembly, Fintiri briefly served as acting governor in 2014 after the impeachment of Murtala Nyako. As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate he won the 2019 governorship election after a supplementary poll, defeating the incumbent Muhammadu Umaru Jibrilla Bindow, and was re-elected in 2023 after another supplementary election against Aishatu Dahiru Ahmed (Binani) of the APC.

His administration has emphasised urban infrastructure in the Yola–Jimeta metropolis, including flyovers and road dualisation, alongside rural roads, health facilities and empowerment schemes for small businesses. On 27 February 2026 Fintiri announced his defection from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in a statewide broadcast, a move followed by members of his cabinet and several state legislators. His second and final term ends in May 2027.
